The Art of Teri Laffan

Artist Statement:

In my most recent pieces I use colored pencil, powder pigments, watercolor and ink wash. I use a heavy , museum quality printing paper. I first draw the black line without looking at the paper. It is an unconscious way of drawing and, consequently, the resulting image is loose and distorted looking. The drawings are then shaded using soft layers of colored pencils, embellishing some areas with metallic paint of golds and pearl, ink wash and watercolor. The images using this technique are then cut out and ³layered² to give a 3-D effect. The gilt and wood frames are then built around the pictures to give a shadow box effect and are quite dramatic when illuminated. My current pictures have an icon-like feeling about them and are unusual in that they combine a quality of looseness and depth with great attention to detail. I do commissioned works also including portraits and nudes.

I have been a resident of Seattle since 1981. I grew up in an Irish-Catholic family in Iowa. Art has always been a powerful force in my life and was very important in my family: my mother was a painter, my father an architect. I have traveled and lived in Mexico, Spain, Italy and throughout Europe and spend several months a year in a small village in Mexico doing my work. I incorporate the images, religious motifs, myths and symbolism of other cultures into my work. I graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a major in fine art and attended Tyler School of Art in Rome, Italy. I have been teaching art since 1985 and currently teach at my studio/school, Little Art School & Gallery.
